is by getting his claws on the sacred Shikon No Tama (Jewel of Four Souls).

He first fell in love with a Miko (Priestess) named Kikyo who possed
the sacred jewel. She had the abillity to purefire the jewel.
one day a demon who swort the jewel killed kikyo making her believe
InuYasha did it. This demon also tricked InuYasha into stealling the jewel and kikyo with her last ownth of strengh shot InuYasha
to a tree with an arrow.
50 years he was held there, until a girl from the future set him
free, her name was Kagome.
